The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife2

Evenings center on Collins Avenue restaurants and hotel lounges, and Sandbar at Newport Pier serves over the water until 10pm. Gateway Park's stage hosts concerts and movie nights. Late clubs are a drive south.

Meet people2

Most of what is on is run by the city. Bingo every Wednesday at Gateway Center, the Art Uncorked series, movie nights at Gateway Park and volunteer beach cleanups at the pier. Clubs and leagues are thin beyond that.

Peace and quiet2

Collins Avenue carries nearly everything, so it backs up, and there is usually a tower going up somewhere along it. Winter is the busy season. The beach side of the buildings is far calmer than the street side.

Walkability3

The city is one long strip, about two miles of Collins Avenue with the beach on one side. You can walk to Newport Fishing Pier, a park and a plaza for groceries, but Collins is wide and errands farther out need a car or bus.

On the water3

Newport Fishing Pier is free to walk and charges a fee to fish. There is no public marina in town, so boaters use Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park just south, with 152 wet slips, a boat ramp and a charter fishing fleet.

Beaches4

Two miles of public beach run behind the towers, reached by access paths between the buildings. The sand is wide and the pier breaks up the view. In winter the high rises put the beach in shade by mid afternoon.

Dining and arts4

Collins Avenue packs in restaurants at street level and inside the hotel towers, from quick counters to white tablecloth rooms, and you can eat over the water at Sandbar at Newport Pier. The city adds its Art Uncorked exhibitions and readings.

Outdoors and wellness2

Parks are small and tidy. Gateway Park has five acres with a stage and butterfly garden, Heritage Park has a dog park and open field, and Town Center Park has a fitness trail. Real trails start at Oleta River State Park across the bridge.

Affordability1

Nearly all housing is in oceanfront and bayfront towers, priced near the top of the Florida coast. Monthly condo fees are high, and older buildings can carry special assessments.

Airport access4

Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is about 25 to 30 minutes north and Miami (MIA) about 35 to 40 minutes south. Both depend on how Collins Avenue and the causeways are moving.
