Nightlife3

Better than you'd expect for a small downtown. Terra Fermata has something on stage seven nights a week, from a Monday jam to weekend touring acts, and a handful of bars sit a short walk away. It is not a 2am town.

Meet people4

Lots of standing dates. Rock'n Riverwalk puts a band on the Riverwalk stage on Sunday afternoons, the Stuart Green Market runs Sunday mornings, Terra Fermata has open jams early in the week, and Stuart Main Street runs strolls and street festivals.

Peace and quiet3

Downtown is small and gets busy on weekends and in winter, when parking can take a few laps. U.S. 1 and the bridges carry steady traffic, and trains run right through the middle of town. Neighborhoods off the main roads are calm.

Walkability4

Downtown is compact. From the Riverwalk you can reach restaurants, shops, galleries, the music stage and Memorial Park on foot in a few minutes. It is a small area, though, and the beach is a drive over two bridges.

On the water5

Water on three sides. The St. Lucie River wraps around downtown, the Indian River Lagoon is to the east, and the St. Lucie Inlet puts you offshore fast for the sailfish the town is known for. Marinas are all over. Watch water quality after lake releases.

Beaches3

The beaches are on Hutchinson Island, about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown, with public parking and room to spread out. St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park, reached by boat, is about as empty as a Florida beach gets.

Dining and arts4

A strong restaurant row for a town this size, mostly independent places packed into a few downtown blocks, plus working studios, galleries and antique shops. A historic theater downtown books concerts and shows through the year.

Outdoors and wellness3

The Riverwalk is the daily walk, and the Sunday Green Market sets up at Memorial Park. Bigger preserves and trails are a 15 to 20 minute drive. Most of the outdoor life here happens on a boat or a paddleboard.

Affordability3

Middle of the pack for the Florida coast. Prices generally run below Jupiter and the rest of Palm Beach County, with older houses and condos near downtown and newer neighborhoods to the west. Waterfront and island addresses cost much more.

Airport access3

No commercial airport nearby. The Palm Beach airport is about 45 minutes south on I-95, and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO) are each a longer haul. Fine for occasional trips, tiring if you fly every week.
