Nightlife2
A few places, and they keep island hours. Paddy's Raw Bar has 16 taps and live music some nights, and Mango Mike's and the Sand Bar are the other spots near the center of the island. Lively in summer, sleepy in winter.
Meet people2
The island runs on a few standing dates. The Civic Club meets the third Thursday of each month at the firehouse with a potluck, the lighthouse holds a sunset and full moon climb every month, and the Charity Chili Cookoff each March has run for more than 40 years. The Sea Turtle Patrol takes volunteers.
Peace and quiet4
No high rises. The county caps buildings at 47 feet. Summer and spring break fill the rental houses and the public beach, fall is lighter, and winter is very quiet, with some places closed for the season.
Walkability3
The middle of the island is the walkable part. The bridge lands at Lighthouse Park, with the public beach, a small grocery, restaurants and shops within a few blocks, and a paved path runs along Gulf Beach Drive to the state park. Farther out you need a bike or a car.
On the water3
The bay side is the boating side. A free county ramp sits by the bridge, Regatta Park has a kayak launch, and the state park has two unpaved ramps for smaller boats. There is no marina on the island, so slips and fuel mean Apalachicola or Carrabelle.
Beaches5
This is the reason to come. The state park at the east end has nine miles of undeveloped beach, and Dr. Beach named it the number one beach in America in 2023. The main public beach at Lighthouse Park has a bathhouse, pavilions and parking. Leashed dogs are allowed on the county beaches, though not in the state park.
Dining and arts2
A short list, mostly casual. Blue Parrot sits right on the Gulf, Paddy's is the raw bar, and there is pizza, donuts, ice cream and coffee near the center. The lighthouse has a small museum and Sea Oats Art Gallery shows local work. For more choices, Apalachicola is 11 miles away over two bridges.
Outdoors and wellness4
The state park covers the east end of the island, with nine miles of beach, the 2.5 mile Gap Point Trail out to the bay, kayak rentals and almost 300 kinds of birds. Its campground has been closed for renovations since July 2026.
Affordability1
Expensive. Redfin put the median sale near $1.1 million for the island's zip code over the three months ending August 2026, and that figure includes the mainland side of the bridge. The county requires new homes here to sit above flood level and have impact windows, so price out wind and flood insurance early.
Airport access1
A long drive. Tallahassee (TLH) is about 74 miles and an hour and 40 minutes away, and Northwest Florida Beaches (ECP) is a little over two hours west.

A night out is oysters and a cold drink at Paddy's Raw Bar or dinner on the Gulf at the Blue Parrot, with a band if it's the season. Once a month the better plan is the sunset and full moon climb at the lighthouse. It's an early island.
