The scorecard

Nightlife1
Early nights. A few casual restaurants along A1A and South Patrick Drive serve dinner and a beer, and most of town is dark by 9. Bars and live music are in Cocoa Beach or downtown Melbourne, 20 to 25 minutes either way.
Meet people3
The city recreation department does a lot. There are drop in exercise classes and open gym at the Schechter Community Center, sand volleyball at Pelican Beach Park and a free boat trip to Samsons Island the first Sunday of each month.
Peace and quiet4
Residential and calm. A1A and South Patrick Drive carry the through traffic, and the beach lots fill on weekends and launch days. Beach parking is paid every day from 7am to 7pm.
Walkability2
Good for a bike, less so on foot. Parks and beach crossovers are spread along A1A and the city runs a few miles end to end, so groceries and most errands end up being a short drive.
On the water3
The Banana River and its canals line the west side, good for kayaks and small boats. Samsons Island, a city nature park, can only be reached by water and has public docks on three sides.
Beaches4
Four city beach parks. Pelican Beach Park has pavilions, grills and sand volleyball, and Hightower Beach Park has 2,800 feet of beachfront and a 560 foot boardwalk. Erosion is an ongoing fight here.
Dining and arts2
A short list of casual places for pizza, tacos, breakfast and a beer with dinner. There are no theaters or galleries to speak of. Melbourne's King Center and Eau Gallie Arts District are the closest culture.
Outdoors and wellness4
Hightower Beach Park covers more than 18 acres of dune with a boardwalk and wildlife overlooks. Add a Skate/BMX park, the E. Lorraine Gott Dog Park, sports fields and Samsons Island across the water.
Affordability3
Mid range for the beach side. Houses cost more than the mainland and less than the towns with more oceanfront. Barrier island wind and flood insurance are part of the math.
Airport access3
About 20 minutes to Melbourne (MLB), which has a short list of nonstops. Orlando (MCO) is about an hour by way of the Pineda Causeway and I-95.
