The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
Very little after dark. A few restaurant bars and a beachfront tiki bar at Sundial have music at sunset, kitchens close early, and the island keeps its lights low at night on purpose.
Meet people3
A decent list for a small island. The Sunday farmers market at City Hall, classes and films at BIG ARTS, group rides with the Sanibel Bicycle Club, and volunteer shifts with SCCF or the Ding Darling refuge.
Peace and quiet4
No traffic lights, low buildings and dark, quiet nights. The tradeoff is Periwinkle Way on winter afternoons, when cars heading for the causeway back up for a long way.
Walkability3
Better by bike than on foot. About 25 miles of shared use paths link the shops along Periwinkle Way to the beaches and the refuge, and it is all flat. Things are spread out, so walking alone will not cover it.
On the water4
Bay on one side, Gulf on the other. Sanibel Marina sits on the east end, Tarpon Bay Explorers rents kayaks inside the refuge, and Pine Island Sound is minutes away. Fewer slips and ramps than a mainland boating town.
Beaches5
Miles of Gulf beach known around the country for shells. Lighthouse Beach on the east end was rebuilt with new sand after Ian, and Bowman's Beach is the long, undeveloped one to the west. Parking is paid.
Dining and arts3
Mostly casual island spots, with Doc Ford's and the rebuilt Lighthouse Cafe back open. BIG ARTS brings concerts, films and gallery shows, and the Shell Show and Festival ran for the 89th time in March 2026.
Outdoors and wellness5
Among the best on the coast. Ding Darling has Wildlife Drive (closed Fridays), the Indigo Trail and the Bailey Tract, and Tarpon Bay for paddling. Add 25 miles of bike paths and a Sunday farmers market in season.
Affordability1
Among the most expensive towns on the Southwest Florida coast, even after Ian. Flood and wind insurance are a big part of the monthly cost, and many rebuilt homes sit higher and sell for more.
Airport access3
Southwest Florida (RSW) is about 45 minutes away over the rebuilt causeway. In winter, allow extra time to get off the island in the afternoon.
