The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife2
Mostly restaurants, sports bars and breweries spread across shopping plazas, with a band here and there on weekends. There is no one nightlife street, and most places are quiet by 10 or 11. Stuart and Fort Pierce have more going on downtown.
Meet people3
A big, spread out city with a fair amount of organized activity if you look for it, like city rec leagues, golf leagues, community events in Tradition and Mets spring training games every February and March. You have to drive to all of it.
Peace and quiet3
Neighborhood streets are quiet and mostly residential. The catch is traffic. The city has grown fast, and Port St. Lucie Boulevard, U.S. 1 and the roads around Tradition and St. Lucie West back up at rush hour and stay busy all year.
Walkability1
Built for cars. Homes, shops and restaurants are spread over a very large area with no traditional downtown, and almost every errand is a drive. A few planned centers like Tradition are walkable once you park there.
On the water3
The North Fork of the St. Lucie River winds through the east side, a quiet, shaded stretch for kayaks and small boats, with a few city parks and ramps along it. Many canals are freshwater drainage, not boating water, and the ocean is a long run by river.
Beaches2
No beach in the city. The nearest sand is on Hutchinson Island, about 20 to 30 minutes east depending on where you start, by way of Jensen Beach or Fort Pierce. The beaches there are public and uncrowded, so it works as a weekend habit.
Dining and arts2
Plenty of places to eat, but mostly chains and plaza restaurants with some good independents mixed in. Arts are thin. For a historic theater, galleries or a restaurant row, you go to Stuart or Fort Pierce.
Outdoors and wellness3
Decent and close to home. The North Fork has a boardwalk and a paddling trail, the city keeps a botanical garden on the river, and a large state preserve of marsh and flatwoods runs along the east side. Golf courses are all over.
Affordability4
One of the more affordable cities near the southeast coast. Newer houses here cost noticeably less than similar ones in Martin or Palm Beach County, and being inland helps on flood insurance. Check HOA and district fees in the newer areas.
Airport access3
The Palm Beach airport is about 50 minutes to an hour south on I-95 or the Turnpike, and Orlando (MCO) is under two hours north. Both are doable, neither is quick.
