The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife3
Beach bar nightlife, not club nightlife. The Sandshaker, Bamboo Willie's on the boardwalk and Paddy O'Leary's keep the core busy on weekends, and free Bands on the Beach concerts run on Tuesdays from April through October.
Meet people2
Fewer organized groups than in the city. The standing date is Bands on the Beach on Tuesday evenings at the Gulfside Pavilion, plus the air show each July. For clubs and leagues you cross the bridges to Pensacola.
Peace and quiet3
It swings with the calendar. Summer weekends and air show week in July bring bridge backups and full parking lots. From late fall through winter the island is calm, and the national seashore on either side is always quiet.
Walkability3
The core is walkable. The Gulf pier, the boardwalk on the sound side, restaurants and the beach all sit within a few blocks, and a free trolley runs in summer. Groceries and most errands are back over the bridge.
On the water4
Water on both sides. The Gulf pier has a wide fishing platform in about 20 feet of water with a bait and tackle shop, and Santa Rosa Sound on the north side is calm for boats, paddleboards and dockside dinners.
Beaches5
Bright white sand and clear green water, with Casino Beach by the pier as the main public beach and miles of undeveloped Gulf Islands National Seashore on both sides. There are dog beach areas too.
Dining and arts2
Mostly seafood and beach bars, like Peg Leg Pete's, Flounder's Chowder House and The Grand Marlin, and the bushwacker is the house drink. For galleries, theater and more choice, downtown Pensacola is across the bay.
Outdoors and wellness4
Gulf Islands National Seashore wraps the island, with Fort Pickens and a campground to the west and Opal Beach to the east. In mid 2026 the Battery 234 loop and the Fort Pickens visitor center were closed, but the fort was open.
Affordability2
Expensive for the Pensacola area. Supply is small, mostly condos and elevated houses, and much of it sits on leased island land with its own fees. Barrier island wind and flood insurance are a big part of the budget.
Airport access3
Pensacola (PNS) is about 30 minutes away across two bridges, longer on summer weekends. It reaches the main hubs, but many longer trips mean a connection.
