Nightlife4
One of the loudest nights out on the Panhandle. Tootsie's reopened in May 2026 in the old Spinnaker building with three floors and two stages, Schooners and Sharky's have bands by the sand, and Margaritaville at Pier Park has music daily.
Meet people4
Lots of ways in. Thursday night concerts at Aaron Bessant Park all summer, free pickleball courts at the Lyndell Center, ranger led hikes at St. Andrews State Park and big events like Ironman Florida each November.
Peace and quiet1
Not quiet. Spring and summer bring heavy traffic along the beach roads, and concerts, car shows and motorcycle rallies keep the calendar full well into fall. January is about as calm as it gets.
Walkability2
Pier Park is the one place you can park once and walk to shops, restaurants, the city pier and the sand. Gayle's Trails give you paved miles for a bike. Everything else is spread along the beach road, so plan to drive.
On the water4
Grand Lagoon is the boating center, with Capt. Anderson's, Lighthouse, Pirate's Cove and Treasure Island marinas. Bay Point has 180 slips, St. Andrews State Park has a public ramp, and two long piers reach into the Gulf.
Beaches5
Wide, soft white sand for miles, with public accesses all along the beach road plus the Russell-Fields city pier and the M.B. Miller county pier. St. Andrews State Park adds jetties to snorkel and a shuttle to undeveloped Shell Island.
Dining and arts3
Mostly seafood houses and beach bars, with the dockside restaurants at Capt. Anderson's Marina a long time favorite. Festivals carry the culture side, like UNwineD in March and the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in April.
Outdoors and wellness4
Conservation Park has 24 miles of unpaved trails and a mile of boardwalks across 2,900 acres, and St. Andrews State Park has nature trails and a campground. Outside those two, most of the beach is built up.
Affordability3
Middle of the pack for the Florida coast. There is a deep supply of condos at a wide range of prices, plus houses on the bay side. Budget for condo fees and for wind and flood insurance, which run high here.
Airport access4
Northwest Florida Beaches (ECP) is about 25 minutes north of Pier Park, a little more from the east end. It is a small, easy airport. Destin Fort Walton (VPS) is a bit over an hour west if you need another option.
