Ozello
A handful of homes on marsh islands at the end of a nine mile winding road. About as remote as the Gulf coast gets.
You launch a kayak from the back yard, fish the oyster bars and don't see another boat all morning.
The scorecard

Nightlife1
None to speak of. Two waterfront seafood places serve dinner and that's the evening. After sunset it's stars, frogs and a very dark nine mile road back to US 19.
Meet people1
Very little is organized out here. The Ozello Civic Association is the one hub, with a chili cook off and craft show in February. For clubs, markets and concerts you drive to Crystal River.
Peace and quiet5
About as quiet as the Gulf coast gets. Ozello Trail winds nine miles through marsh and hammock to get here, there is no through traffic, and whole mornings pass without a car going by.
Walkability1
Nothing is walkable in the errands sense. There are no shops or sidewalks, the road is narrow and winding, and the nearest groceries are back out near US 19.
On the water4
You're surrounded by it. Ozello Community Park has a public ramp, and kayaks slip into the creeks of St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve. It's shallow and rocky, so bring a skiff or a paddle, not a deep hull.
Beaches1
No beach. The shoreline is salt marsh, mangrove islands and oyster bars. For sand you drive back out and around to the small county beach west of Crystal River, the better part of an hour.
Dining and arts1
Two places, both seafood and both on the water. Peck's Old Port Cove is known for blue crab and Backwater Fins does seafood boils and brunch. Anything else is a drive to Crystal River or Homosassa.
Outdoors and wellness5
This is why you come. Miles of marsh creeks to paddle in St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve, redfish on the oyster bars, the Chassahowitzka refuge to the south and big sky sunsets.
Affordability4
Homes are few and priced below most Florida waterfront. The tradeoff is risk. The land is very low and floods in storms, so insurance and elevation rules are a big part of the real cost.
Airport access1
Far. Tampa (TPA) is an hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes once you count the nine mile road out to US 19. Orlando is more than two hours.
