The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife3

Flagler Avenue is the night out. Flagler Tavern has live music every evening and keeps it going until close on Fridays and Saturdays, with more bars and patios within a couple of blocks. Lively, but not wild.

Meet people4

Plenty of standing dates. A Saturday morning farmers market that has run since 1991, an art stroll on Canal Street the first Saturday of the month, a monthly wine walk on Flagler Avenue and a shuffleboard club right on the Avenue.

Peace and quiet3

Summer weekends and holidays bring day trip crowds from Orlando, and the causeways and beach ramps back up. Midweek and in the cooler months it settles into a small town pace, especially on the mainland side.

Walkability4

Two walkable pockets. Flagler Avenue runs a few blocks from the Indian River to the sand, lined with restaurants and shops, and Canal Street does the same job on the mainland. You need a bike or a car to get between them.

On the water3

The Indian River runs between the mainland and the beach side. Swoope Boat Ramp has two ramps with floating docks and a run out to Ponce Inlet and the ocean, but only 36 parking spaces, so go early on weekends.

Beaches5

Thirteen miles of wide, hard packed sand you can drive and bike on, with surfers gathered at the break by the inlet jetty. At the south end it runs into 24 more miles of undeveloped shoreline at Canaveral National Seashore.

Dining and arts3

Flagler Avenue and Third Avenue cover seafood, Italian, barbecue and tacos, and Norwood's has its treehouse bar. The Little Theatre stages community productions, and the IMAGES art festival reached its 50th year in 2026.

Outdoors and wellness4

Smyrna Dunes Park has two miles of boardwalk over the dunes at the inlet and a beach where dogs are welcome. Canaveral National Seashore is just south for paddling Mosquito Lagoon, and there is a farmers market every Saturday.

Affordability3

Middle of the pack for the Florida coast. Beach side houses and anything near Flagler Avenue cost well above the state median, while mainland neighborhoods come in lower. Wind and flood insurance add up on the barrier island.

Airport access4

Daytona Beach (DAB) is about 30 minutes north with a short list of airlines. Orlando (MCO) is a little over an hour away and flies nearly everywhere. Sanford (SFB) is about 50 minutes.
