Social Scene

The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife2

Nights are low key. Dinner out is the main event, and a few restaurant bars stay open after. For live music or a late night you drive to Hollywood, Gulfstream Park or Miami Beach.

Meet people3

Decent options if you like the outdoors. Greynolds Park hosts a monthly bluegrass festival, the Friends of Oleta River State Park back cleanups and trail work, and the city puts on events like Bark Fest and a 5K run in October.

Peace and quiet2

Traffic is the tradeoff. NE 163rd Street, Biscayne Boulevard and the Golden Glades interchange are busy most of the day. Side streets and the parks along the Oleta River are much calmer.

Walkability2

This is a driving city. The main roads are wide and built for cars, and stores sit in plazas with parking lots. A paved greenway along the Snake Creek canal and the NMB Line city buses help, but most errands need a car.

On the water3

The Oleta River, Maule Lake and a web of canals give boaters a route to the bay, and you can launch a kayak at Oleta River State Park or East Greynolds Park. Slips are mostly private. Public ramps are over at Haulover Park.

Beaches2

Despite the name, there is no ocean beach in the city. Oleta River State Park has a small sandy swimming beach on the bay, and the Atlantic at Haulover Park or Sunny Isles Beach is about ten minutes east over the causeway.

Dining and arts4

The draw is range. Small kitchens along NE 163rd Street and the plazas around it cook food from dozens of countries, most of it casual and fairly priced. Greynolds Park adds bluegrass and the annual Love-in Music Festival.

Outdoors and wellness3

Oleta River State Park has 15 miles of off road bike trails, mangrove paddling and rental kayaks, and Greynolds Park adds 249 acres with walking trails and a nine hole golf course. Oleta often fills up on weekends.

Affordability3

Mid range for coastal South Florida. Single story houses and older condos cost far less than the barrier islands across the causeway, while homes on the canals cost more. Wind insurance is still a real line item.

Airport access4

Miami (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) are each about 25 to 30 minutes, and I-95 is right at the west edge of town. Rush hour at the Golden Glades can add a lot.
