The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife3

A solid handful of spots, all in one corner of town. Pete's Bar, Lemon Bar and the Flying Iguana anchor Beaches Town Center, and the mood is more corner bar than club. For later and louder you go two miles south to Jax Beach.

Meet people3

A small town with a few steady meeting points. The Beaches Green Market sets up on Saturdays at Jarboe Park, Dancin' in the Street takes over the Town Center every May, and The BookMark is the kind of bookstore where you run into people you know.

Peace and quiet3

Most of town is calm streets a few blocks from the ocean. The Town Center corner is the exception, with steady evening crowds and tight parking, and Atlantic Boulevard and Third Street carry real traffic. Summer weekends are the busy stretch.

Walkability4

The town is small enough that most streets are an easy walk or bike ride from Beaches Town Center, where restaurants, coffee, a bookstore and shops share a few blocks with the Atlantic Beach side. The sand is at the end of the street.

On the water2

Water here means the ocean. There is no marina or boat ramp in town, so boats launch on the Intracoastal in the neighboring towns or up at Mayport. Surfing and paddling off the beach are the easy options.

Beaches4

Wide, firm sand with public access at nearly every street end. Parking at the accesses is limited, so walking or biking over is the usual move. The surf is decent and the sand is less crowded than Jax Beach to the south.

Dining and arts3

Good eating for a small town, nearly all of it in Beaches Town Center. North Beach Fish Camp, Doro, Mezza Luna and Hawkers sit within a block or two of each other, with The BookMark and a row of shops in between.

Outdoors and wellness3

Jarboe Park is the town's main green space and home to the Saturday green market. Beyond that, the outdoors is the beach itself. For wooded trails, a lake and camping, Hanna Park is about ten minutes north.

Affordability2

Pricey. The town is small and built out, so few homes come up for sale and anything near the ocean runs well above the Florida median. The blocks west of Third Street cost less, and beach town insurance applies everywhere.

Airport access4

Jacksonville (JAX) is about 35 minutes away, on the north side of the city. That is a short airport run for a Florida beach town.
