Mexico Beach
A small, quiet Gulf town on the Forgotten Coast that was nearly wiped out by Hurricane Michael and has steadily rebuilt around its wide, uncrowded beach.
You walk the squeaky white sand at sunrise, fish the canal or take the boat out to the reefs and finish with a fish taco on the beach.
The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
Barely any, and that is the point. A beach bar or a deck with music on summer weekends, and the newly rebuilt Toucans was set to reopen in fall 2026. Panama City is the nearest place for a real night out.
Meet people2
Small and tight knit. The volunteer special events team runs things like the gumbo cookoff that pays for the Fourth of July fireworks, and the kingfish tournament at the boat ramp draws a crowd in July. Beyond that, you meet people on the beach and at the ramp.
Peace and quiet5
One of the quietest beach towns on the Gulf. Summers bring rental guests, but there are no high rises and very little traffic, and winters are almost silent.
Walkability3
Compact. The town runs along US 98 and the beach, so you can walk or golf cart to the sand and a few shops. Groceries and most errands mean Port St. Joe or Panama City.
On the water4
Good. A canal and public boat ramp give quick access to the Gulf, and the local reef association has built artificial reefs offshore for fishing and diving. The Al Cathey pier is funded and permitted, with about a year of construction ahead.
Beaches4
Wide white quartz sand that squeaks under your feet, and a shoreline rebuilt in 2025 with three miles of new dunes. Calm, clear water most days, but there are no lifeguards.
Dining and arts2
Limited. A few casual seafood spots like Killer Seafood, an ice cream and candy shop with summer lines, and Toucans coming back in a bigger building. Port St. Joe, about 15 minutes east, adds more.
Outdoors and wellness4
Great if you like it wild. St. Joseph Peninsula State Park and Cape San Blas are a short drive, St. Joseph Bay is close by for paddling, and the coast here stays undeveloped for miles.
Affordability3
Hard to pin down because sales are thin and prices range from older lots to new Gulf front homes over $1M. Values are generally below Emerald Coast beach towns, but wind and flood insurance on new construction is a big part of the budget.
Airport access2
Northwest Florida Beaches (ECP) is about 50 minutes west. Tallahassee is about two hours. Most trips mean a connection.
