Merritt Island
A big, leafy island between the Indian and Banana Rivers, full of canal homes and boat docks, with the space center and a huge wildlife refuge at its north end.
You take the boat out from your backyard canal in the morning, run errands on Courtenay Parkway after lunch and drive the refuge loop to watch birds at dusk.
The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
Quiet. There are a few waterfront bars and grills and some local wine and coffee spots, and that is mostly it. For a real night out people go to Cocoa Village, Cocoa Beach or Port Canaveral, all 10 to 20 minutes away.
Meet people3
Easier than the size suggests if you join something. Kiwanis Island Park has a community center with a gym, courts and ballfields, the veterans memorial center hosts events, and boating and fishing clubs give a lot of people their crew.
Peace and quiet4
Calm. Most of the island is residential streets, canals and big trees, and the north end is open refuge land. The busy part is the commercial strip along Courtenay Parkway and SR 520, plus traffic around big launches.
Walkability1
Not walkable. It is an unincorporated area built around the car, with long blocks and errands spread along the main roads. People walk and bike in their own neighborhoods and on the refuge roads.
On the water5
This is the draw. Many homes sit on canals with docks, the Indian River is on one side and the Banana River on the other, and boats can reach the ocean through the Port Canaveral locks. Kayak launches and ramps are all over the island.
Beaches2
No ocean beach on the island. Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral are about 15 to 20 minutes east over the causeway, and Playalinda Beach in the national seashore is a longer drive north through the refuge.
Dining and arts2
Mostly chains and local casual places along the main roads, plus a handful of waterfront grills. For more choice you head to Cocoa Village or the beach towns, both close.
Outdoors and wellness5
Among the best on the Space Coast. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge covers the north end with marsh, scrub and birding drives, and the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex is next door. You need a refuge pass for Black Point Wildlife Drive and some boat ramps.
Affordability3
A middle ground. You get more house, land and water access for the money than on the beach, but canal and riverfront homes carry a premium, and flood insurance matters in the low lying areas.
Airport access4
Orlando (MCO) is about 45 minutes west on the Beachline, and Melbourne (MLB) is about 35 minutes south. Easy for a Space Coast address.
