Nightlife1
Early nights. There is no bar strip on the key, just a few restaurant lounges along Gulf of Mexico Drive, and the beaches close at 11. For a show or a late drink you drive to St. Armands Circle or downtown Sarasota.
Meet people2
It takes a little effort. The chamber puts on the Savor the Sounds concerts at the Karon Family Pavilion and the yearly Taste of the Keys, the town has a public tennis center, and Let's Talk Longboat sessions run monthly.
Peace and quiet5
About as quiet as a Gulf island gets. One road runs the length of the key and there is no commercial strip. Winter brings slow traffic at the bridges on both ends, but the beach stays uncrowded.
Walkability2
The key is about ten miles long with one main road, Gulf of Mexico Drive, so most errands are a drive. A path runs alongside it for bikes, and from many spots you can walk to a beach access or a park but not much else.
On the water4
Sarasota Bay on one side and the Gulf on the other, with Longboat Pass and New Pass at the ends. There are bay side canals, a large resort marina at the south end and rebuilt bay overlooks at Quick Point Nature Preserve.
Beaches5
Miles of soft white sand with very few people on it. The town keeps 12 public beach accesses, most with small lots of 15 to 40 spaces, and there are no lifeguards. In winter, get to the lot early.
Dining and arts3
A short list of good dinner spots, like The Lazy Lobster, plus the restaurants at the St. Regis resort. There is not much variety on the key itself, but St. Armands Circle and Sarasota's theaters are a short drive south.
Outdoors and wellness4
Joan M. Durante Park reopened in December 2025 with a 1.4 mile trail and new boardwalks through the mangroves. Quick Point Nature Preserve had its boardwalks rebuilt in 2026, and Bayfront Park has a new living seawall.
Affordability1
One of the most expensive places on this coast. Gulf front and bay front homes run far above the Florida median, older condos are the lower rung, and wind and flood insurance on a barrier island adds a lot.
Airport access4
Sarasota Bradenton (SRQ) is about 20 to 30 minutes away, depending on where you are on the key and how the bridge is moving. Tampa (TPA) is a little over an hour for more nonstop routes.
