The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife2
Modest. The Caribbean Club, a bayside bar that dates to 1938, has live music Thursday through Sunday and stays open until around 1am. Beyond that it is sunset tiki bars and early mornings, with no late night district.
Meet people3
The reef is the meeting point. REEF trains volunteer fish surveyors and hosts a monthly Fish and Friends talk, the Coral Restoration Foundation runs dive programs you can join, and the Upper Keys Sailing Club sits on the bay side.
Peace and quiet3
US 1 is busy here, since every car headed down the Keys passes through, and weekends and holidays bring real backups. The side streets and bayside canals are much calmer, especially in late summer and fall.
Walkability1
Key Largo is a long, thin strip of shops and marinas along US 1 with no real center, so plan to drive. The Overseas Heritage Trail runs alongside for bike rides, but crossing the highway on foot is no fun.
On the water5
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the country's first undersea park, is right here with a marina, a ramp for boats up to 36 feet and daily snorkel, dive and glass bottom boats. The reef is east and Florida Bay is west.
Beaches2
Thin on sand. Pennekamp has two small beaches, Cannon Beach for snorkeling and Far Beach for a swim under the palms, and Harry Harris Park in Tavernier has a protected lagoon. Expect shallow, calm water, not a long shoreline walk.
Dining and arts3
Plenty of casual seafood, from dockside fish sandwiches to key lime pie, with a few nicer bayfront dining rooms for sunset. The arts side is light, mostly small galleries and bar bands, with a bit more in Islamorada.
Outdoors and wellness5
Outstanding. Reefs and wrecks offshore, mangrove paddling trails at Pennekamp, and more than six miles of mostly paved trails through tropical hardwood forest at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.
Affordability2
Pricey, though a notch below Islamorada and Key West. Canal homes and anything on open water cost well above the Florida median, and Keys wind and flood insurance add heavily. Older condos and dry lots are the entry point.
Airport access2
Miami International (MIA) is about an hour and 15 minutes north by US 1 or Card Sound Road, more on a weekend. Fort Lauderdale is closer to an hour and 45. There is no airline service in the Upper Keys.

Community and social scene
A night out is sunset over Florida Bay with a band and a rum drink, maybe at the Caribbean Club, then fish at a dockside table. A few bars run later, but with dive boats leaving in the morning, most nights wrap up early.
