Nightlife2
Modest and early. The Lorelei at mile marker 82 has a band by the water most evenings, playing roughly 5 to 9, and it closes at 10. Other tiki bars follow the same pattern. No clubs and no late night district.
Meet people3
Founders Park is the hub, with a pool, courts, a marina and a monthly rec schedule. The Morada Way Art Walk brings art, food and live music on the third Thursday of the month, and the History of Diving Museum hosts evening talks.
Peace and quiet4
Off the highway it is calm, with dark skies and water on both sides. The trade off is US 1, the only road through, which backs up on weekends, holidays and during lobster mini season in late July.
Walkability1
The village stretches across several islands along about 18 miles of US 1, so nearly everything is a drive. The Overseas Heritage Trail gives you a bike path beside the road, and Morada Way has a few walkable blocks.
On the water5
Ocean on one side, Florida Bay on the other. Charter fleets and marinas line the highway, the reef and Alligator Reef Light are a short run out, and the backcountry flats are known for bonefish, tarpon and redfish.
Beaches2
Not a beach town. Anne's Beach is a shallow strip with a boardwalk where you wade out, and Founders Park and Library Beach Park have small sandy pockets. The water is clear and calm, but there is little sand and no surf.
Dining and arts3
Good waterfront fish houses, many of which will cook your catch, plus galleries along Morada Way and the History of Diving Museum at mile marker 83. The selection is solid for a small place, without big venues or theaters.
Outdoors and wellness5
Hard to beat. Walk the old quarry walls at Windley Key Fossil Reef, paddle to Lignumvitae Key, snorkel the reef or bike the Overseas Heritage Trail. Indian Key closed in April 2026 for a dock rebuild, so check before you paddle out.
Affordability1
Among the most expensive places on the Florida coast. Even modest canal homes carry very high prices, and wind and flood insurance in the Keys cost far more than on the mainland.
Airport access2
Miami International (MIA) is about an hour and a half north when US 1 is moving, and longer on a busy weekend. Fort Lauderdale is around two hours. The Key West airport is about two hours the other way.
