The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
There really is no nightlife here. Evenings are a beer at a local bar and grill or a tiki bar down the road in Yankeetown, and most nights are early. For anything more you drive to Crystal River or Ocala.
Meet people2
People meet at the boat ramps, the post office and the few local spots on US 19. Town events are small and occasional, so it takes some effort. Fishing and paddling are the easiest way in.
Peace and quiet5
It is about as quiet as Florida gets. US 19 carries trucks through town, but off the highway you hear birds and boat motors. Even the busy seasons are calm.
Walkability1
You drive for nearly everything. Homes are spread out on big lots and along the water, and there are few sidewalks. The paved trail on Inglis Island is the best place to walk or bike.
On the water4
This is a water town. Lake Rousseau sits above the dam, the Withlacoochee runs below it to the Gulf, and the old barge canal is a straight shot out for boats. Fishing is the main hobby.
Beaches1
There is no beach in town. The Gulf shore here is marsh and creeks, not sand, so beach days mean a drive south to Fort Island Gulf Beach near Crystal River or up to Cedar Key.
Dining and arts1
A handful of casual places, like Driftwood Bar and Grill, Main Deck and Galley and Wise Guys Deli, plus Gator Cove Tiki Bar in Yankeetown. Expect fried seafood and burgers. For more choice you head to Crystal River.
Outdoors and wellness4
Lots of protected land. The Cross Florida Greenway, Inglis Dam and Island Recreation Area and the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve in Yankeetown are all minutes away, with trails, birding and paddling.
Affordability5
One of the cheaper places to own on the Gulf side. Many listings are older homes, manufactured homes and river lots. Check the flood zone first, because flood insurance can change the math.
Airport access2
Gainesville (GNV) is about 1 hour 15 minutes away with limited flights. Tampa (TPA) is closer to 1 hour 45 minutes, and Orlando is around 2 hours.
