Hernando Beach
A canal community on the Hernando County coast where most homes have a dock and a short run to the shallow Gulf flats.
You idle down the canal in the morning to fish the flats, take a swim at Pine Island in the afternoon and eat dinner on a patio by the water.

Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife2
Low key. The Lazy Lizard has live bands, and there are a few waterfront patios for a drink at sunset. For anything bigger you drive to Spring Hill or down to Tampa.
Meet people2
Neighbors meet on the docks, at the marina and at the boat ramps. There is no real downtown, so community life runs through boating, fishing and the local restaurants.
Peace and quiet4
Most of the year it is calm and residential. Summer scallop season and nice weekends bring boat traffic and full parking lots at Pine Island and Bayport.
Walkability1
Not a walking town. The canal streets are fine for a stroll or a bike ride, but groceries and errands mean driving to Spring Hill along US 19.
On the water5
This is the reason people move here. Many homes back onto deep canals that lead out to shallow Gulf flats, with Bayport Park and its pier and ramps just south. Scalloping, inshore fishing and kayaking are all close.
Beaches2
Pine Island is the nearby beach, small with soft sand and calm shallow water. It reopened in 2025 with new pavilion roofs and fresh sand after the 2024 storms. It is a nice local beach, not a big white sand coast.
Dining and arts2
A short list of casual places, including Silver Dolphin on the canal, Brian's Place for something a little nicer and the Tropical Grille at the marina. Upper Deck at Rogers Park on the Weeki Wachee River is a few minutes away.
Outdoors and wellness4
Great for the outdoors. The Weeki Wachee River, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park and the Chassahowitzka wildlife area are all close, and Bayport has paddling trails into the marsh.
Affordability3
Pricier than inland Hernando County because of the water. Canal homes with docks set the price, and newer elevated homes cost more. Flood and wind insurance are a big line item, so check elevation before you buy.
Airport access3
Tampa (TPA) is about an hour south on the Suncoast Parkway. St. Pete Clearwater (PIE) is a similar drive.
