Nightlife3

Gulfstream Park is the night out, with a casino open 365 days a year and more than 20 restaurants, bars and nightspots around the track. Away from it the city is mostly condo towers and goes quiet early.

Meet people3

Race days at Gulfstream Park are the easy social plan, with live racing Friday through Sunday during the fall meet and the Pegasus World Cup each January. City parks, courts and the beach parks fill in the rest.

Peace and quiet2

Hallandale Beach Boulevard and US 1 are slow at rush hour, and big race days and the winter season add more cars. The beach is short and backed by towers, so it rarely feels empty.

Walkability2

Not much is close together. The towers sit along A1A, the stores are on wide boulevards, and the village at Gulfstream Park is walkable only once you are there. A free city minibus covers some of the gaps.

On the water3

The Intracoastal runs along the east side of town, with docks behind many of the condo buildings and canal front homes to the west. There is no inlet here, so ocean runs go north to Port Everglades or south to Haulover Inlet.

Beaches3

The city's oceanfront is short, with public beach parks at the north and south ends and a water tower painted like a beach ball marking the way in. The sand is good. Parking is limited and fills on weekends.

Dining and arts3

Most of the dining is at Gulfstream Park, where the village mixes sit down restaurants and casual spots with track side rooms like Ten Palms. Beyond that it is plaza restaurants along the boulevards. Theaters and galleries are a drive.

Outdoors and wellness2

Green space is limited to city parks with courts, fields and a pool, plus the two beach parks. For trails and paddling you drive ten to fifteen minutes to the mangrove park at West Lake in Hollywood or to Oleta River State Park.

Affordability3

Middle of the pack for this stretch of coast. Older condo towers list well below Sunny Isles Beach next door, but monthly fees, reserve funding and special assessments can change the math. Read the building's budget first.

Airport access5

Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is about 15 to 20 minutes north on I-95 or US 1. Miami (MIA) is a workable backup about 35 to 40 minutes south.
