Fort Myers Beach
Seven miles of soft sand on Estero Island, rebuilding after Hurricane Ian with its beach town spirit intact.
You walk the beach at low tide, have lunch near Times Square and watch the shrimp boats head out at dusk.
The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife3
Still a beach bar town, just a smaller one. Live music plays at the beach bars around Times Square, at Margaritaville and along Old San Carlos Boulevard. There are fewer rooms than before Ian, and some lots are still empty.
Meet people2
Thin for now, and mostly event driven. The Bayside Park concert series, the Lions Club Shrimp Festival each March and the sand sculpting championship each November are the big gatherings, with Mound House for volunteering.
Peace and quiet2
Not a quiet island right now. Estero Boulevard is the only road, winter traffic backs up over the bridge, and construction runs on weekdays up and down the beach. Summer and the south end are calmer.
Walkability3
The north end works on foot. From Times Square you can reach the beach, the bay and Old San Carlos Boulevard in minutes. The island is seven miles long though, so farther south you bike, drive or ride LeeTran.
On the water4
Estero Bay is behind you and the Gulf in front. Shrimp boats tie up across Matanzas Pass on San Carlos Island, there is a marina at Pink Shell, and Lovers Key has a boat ramp. The pier is being rebuilt, due in 2027.
Beaches5
Seven miles of wide, flat, soft sand with shallow water, plus two more undeveloped miles at Lovers Key State Park. Public accesses line Estero Boulevard. Two county beach parks have parking closed for repairs.
Dining and arts2
A shorter list than before the storm. The dependable tables are the seafood docks at Fisherman's Wharf, like Dixie Fish Company and Doc Ford's, and the restaurants at Margaritaville. No theaters to speak of.
Outdoors and wellness3
Lovers Key State Park is the standout, with the Black Island Trail, paddling and two miles of beach. Mound House runs kayak tours on Estero Bay. On the island itself, green space is limited.
Affordability2
Pricey. New elevated homes and condos set the market, most of the old ground level cottages are gone, and flood and wind insurance are among the highest costs you will face on this coast.
Airport access4
Southwest Florida (RSW) is about 35 to 45 minutes away. In winter, getting off the island over the bridge can add a good chunk to that, so leave early.
