Nightlife2
Evenings are mellow. The Palace Saloon on Centre Street is the old standby, a few places nearby have live music, and Sounds on Centre puts a free concert downtown on the first Friday of the month from April to October. Most of town is quiet by 10.
Meet people3
A handful of reliable ways in. The farmers market runs every Saturday on North 7th Street, the Island Art Association is a volunteer run gallery with classes and workshops, and Amelia Community Theatre fills two stages with help from volunteers.
Peace and quiet4
Peaceful most of the year, with slow traffic and beaches that rarely feel full. The exceptions are festival weekends, when the Shrimp Festival in May and Dickens on Centre in December pack Centre Street.
Walkability5
Centre Street runs from the marina on the Amelia River straight through the Victorian downtown, with the Saturday market, galleries and the community theatre all a few blocks off it. The ocean is about two miles east, an easy bike ride.
On the water4
The city marina sits at the foot of Centre Street on the Amelia River, where the shrimp boats tie up. More than 30 fishing charters, kayak outfitters and sailing trips work from the island, and the inlet to the ocean is a short run north.
Beaches4
Long, uncrowded Atlantic beaches with public parks spaced along the shore, including Main Beach Park, Seaside Park, Peters Point and North Beach Park. Fort Clinch State Park adds a wilder stretch at the north tip of the island.
Dining and arts4
Centre Street and the blocks around it are lined with restaurants, with an artist run gallery and a community theatre close by. The calendar is full too, with chamber music from December to June, a jazz festival in October and the Shrimp Festival in May.
Outdoors and wellness3
Fort Clinch State Park covers 1,400 acres on the north end, with trails under live oaks, a campground and beach. In town, Egans Creek has 300 acres of marsh with walking trails, and the Saturday market fills North 7th Street.
Affordability2
On the high side. Island homes run well above the Florida median, with the biggest premiums in the historic district and near the ocean. Prices ease once you cross the bridge to the mainland, and storm surge makes flood coverage a must.
Airport access4
Jacksonville (JAX) is about 40 minutes away. The airport sits on the north side of the city, which makes this one of the easier airport drives of any Florida beach town.
