The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife1

Early nights. A few waterfront bars and tiki decks have music in the late afternoon and early evening, and Lemon Bay Playhouse on Dearborn Street puts on plays, but most of town is dark by 9.

Meet people3

Enough to get started. The Thursday Market on Dearborn runs October through May, the all volunteer Englewood Sailing Association sails from Indian Mound Park with a social sail on Wednesdays, and the playhouse is in its 39th season.

Peace and quiet4

Laid back most of the year. State Road 776 and the bridges to Manasota Key slow down in winter, and the beach lots fill on sunny weekends, but there is no real rush hour and summer is very quiet.

Walkability2

Dearborn Street is a pleasant few blocks of shops, markets and the playhouse. Everything else, including the beaches on Manasota Key, the grocery stores and the boat ramps, is a drive.

On the water4

Lemon Bay runs the length of town, sheltered and good for small boats and kayaks, with Stump Pass leading out to the Gulf. Indian Mound Park has a public ramp near Dearborn Street, and the state park has a paddle launch.

Beaches4

Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park has a 900 foot boardwalk, pavilions and volleyball courts. Stump Pass Beach State Park, at the south tip of the key, is a quieter mile of sand for $3 a car. Both are good for shark teeth.

Dining and arts2

Simple and casual. Fish houses, a few spots on Dearborn Street and plays at Lemon Bay Playhouse. A restaurant week called Let's Eat Englewood adds some variety. For more choice you drive to Venice or Punta Gorda.

Outdoors and wellness4

Stump Pass Beach State Park is a narrow strip of sand and trail between the Gulf and Lemon Bay, with ranger led hikes in winter. Add kayaking on the bay, four farmers markets along Dearborn Street in season and shelling on the key.

Affordability4

Still one of the more affordable Gulf towns south of Tampa Bay. Homes inland of Lemon Bay cost well under Venice or Sarasota. Anything on Manasota Key or the bay is far pricier, and flood insurance needs a close look.

Airport access3

Punta Gorda (PGD) is about 40 minutes away, with Allegiant and Sun Country. Sarasota Bradenton (SRQ) is about an hour north, and Fort Myers (RSW) is a little over an hour south.
