The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife1

Early nights. A few oceanfront restaurants and hotel bars along A1A pour a drink at sunset and that is about it. When you want music, Daytona's Main Street and Seabreeze Boulevard are 10 to 15 minutes up the road.

Meet people2

A small town with a small calendar. The Shores Community Center is the hub for classes and get togethers, and the beach does the rest. For festivals, concerts and markets you go next door to Daytona Beach or over the bridge to Port Orange.

Peace and quiet3

Calmer than Daytona, but A1A is the one road through town and it carries everyone heading up and down the beach. Race weeks, Bike Week and Biketoberfest bring traffic and engine noise. The rest of the year is easygoing.

Walkability2

The whole town is a narrow strip along South Atlantic Avenue. The beach is right there and a restaurant or two may be walkable from your building, but groceries and errands mean driving A1A or crossing the Dunlawton Bridge.

On the water3

The Halifax River is a block or two behind A1A, though most of the riverfront is private. The nearest big launch is Causeway Park just over the Dunlawton Bridge, with seven ramps and three fishing piers. Ponce Inlet is a few miles south.

Beaches4

The beach is the whole point. It is the same wide, hard packed sand as Daytona with more room to spread out, public walkovers and oceanfront parks along A1A, and some stretches where you can still drive on.

Dining and arts2

A modest lineup of oceanfront seafood decks, breakfast spots and hotel restaurants along A1A. There are no galleries or theaters to speak of. For those, Beach Street and the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona are a short drive north.

Outdoors and wellness2

The outdoors here is the ocean. You get long beach walks and a few small oceanfront parks, but no trail system. Paddling and shaded boardwalks are across the river at Spruce Creek Park and Buschman Park in Port Orange.

Affordability5

Oceanfront condos here cost far less than in most Florida beach towns, which is the draw. The tradeoff is carrying costs. Ask about monthly fees, special assessments, reserves and insurance for any building before you commit.

Airport access4

Daytona Beach (DAB) is about 15 to 20 minutes away. Sanford (SFB) is about 50 minutes and Orlando (MCO) a bit over an hour.
