The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
Almost none, and people like it that way. A drink at a river side seafood spot or a beach bar is the big night out, and St. Augustine is about 20 minutes north when you want more.
Meet people2
Fewer organized groups than in town. People meet at the beach, the boat ramp and the parks, and most clubs, classes and leagues are up in St. Augustine Beach or St. Augustine.
Peace and quiet5
One of the calmest stretches on this coast. Summer weekends bring day trippers and cars on the beach, but most of the year it is beach houses, condos and the sound of the surf.
Walkability2
Not much to walk to. A1A is the one main road, so you drive for groceries and errands, though the beach itself is a great long walk.
On the water4
The Matanzas River runs right behind the barrier island. Frank Butler Park West has a boat ramp onto the river, and the water is great for kayaks, fishing and crabbing.
Beaches5
Wide, flat and hard packed, with gentle waves on calm days. You can drive and park on the sand at the Crescent Beach ramp, with seasonal hours during sea turtle season.
Dining and arts2
A short list of casual seafood spots, including Commander's Shellfish Camp on the river. For more choice you head north to St. Augustine Beach or downtown.
Outdoors and wellness5
A big strength. Fort Matanzas, Faver Dykes State Park and Matanzas State Forest are all close, and the river and marsh are full of birds and dolphins.
Affordability3
Middle of the road for coastal St. Johns County. Condos and older homes keep the median down, while oceanfront and riverfront houses run much higher, and insurance is a real line item.
Airport access2
This is the trade off. Jacksonville (JAX) is about an hour and ten minutes and Daytona Beach (DAB) is about an hour, so travel days start early.
