The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife1

Nights end early. Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar has local musicians on its deck over the bay but closes at 9, and the village is dark soon after. For anything later, Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach is a few minutes over the bridge.

Meet people2

Small village, short list. The Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival comes every February, a nautical flea market sets up in March, and there is a spring community picnic and a Veterans Day tribute from the village historical society.

Peace and quiet4

A few narrow streets of cottages, crab traps and working docks, with very little going on after dark. Cortez Road at the edge of the village is the exception. It carries the beach traffic, and work on a new bridge is set to start in November 2026.

Walkability2

The village itself is a ten minute walk end to end, past the docks and the fish houses. For groceries and most other errands you drive east on Cortez Road.

On the water5

This is a working waterfront. Commercial boats unload grouper, mullet and stone crab at fish houses on Sarasota Bay, marinas line the shore, and Longboat Pass to the Gulf is a short run by boat.

Beaches2

No beach in the village. Cortez Beach and Coquina Beach are right across the bridge in Bradenton Beach, about five minutes by car when traffic is light.

Dining and arts2

Seafood straight off the boats at a few dockside fish houses, among them Swordfish Grill & Tiki Bar, open daily from 11am to 9pm. That is most of it. The Florida Maritime Museum was still closed for storm repairs at last report.

Outdoors and wellness3

The 98 acre FISH Preserve wraps the east side of the village in mangroves and is being restored after 2024 storm damage. Sarasota Bay is right there for kayaks, and the Gulf beaches are just over the bridge.

Affordability3

Mixed. Old cottages in the historic village are scarce and priced for the water, while condos and manufactured homes along Cortez Road cost much less. All of it is low lying, so flood insurance is part of the math.

Airport access4

Sarasota Bradenton (SRQ) is about 25 to 30 minutes. Tampa International (TPA) is a little over an hour north by way of the Sunshine Skyway.
