Chokoloskee

The scorecard

Tap any score for the local's take.

Nightlife1

There isn't any. The island goes dark soon after the boats are back at the dock, and the nearest bar stools are a few miles up the causeway in Everglades City, where things also close early.

Meet people1

No clubs or leagues out here. You meet people at the boat ramp, on the dock or at the old Smallwood Store. The nearest organized events are across the causeway in Everglades City, like the seafood festival each February.

Peace and quiet5

About as quiet as the Florida coast gets. One causeway in, no through traffic, and nights with little more than wind and water. Winter weekends bring anglers and campers, but never real crowds.

Walkability1

You can walk the whole island in under an hour, but there is little to walk to beyond the docks and the old Smallwood Store. A full grocery run, a pharmacy and most errands mean a long drive toward Naples.

On the water5

This is why you come. Small marinas and ramps put you in Chokoloskee Bay in minutes, with the Ten Thousand Islands and Everglades National Park all around. The park's Gulf Coast area up the causeway has boat tours and kayak rentals.

Beaches1

No real beach. The island is an old shell mound ringed by mangroves and seawalls. For sand you run a boat to the outer keys of the Ten Thousand Islands or drive about an hour to Marco Island.

Dining and arts1

Very little. A casual spot or two on the island and a few seafood houses in Everglades City, which calls itself the stone crab capital. No galleries or theaters, just the Smallwood Store and its trading post history.

Outdoors and wellness5

Wild country in every direction. Everglades National Park and the Ten Thousand Islands by water, plus Big Cypress National Preserve and Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park up the road for swamp walks and birding.

Affordability4

Far cheaper than Naples or Marco Island. Small houses, stilt homes and RV lots make up most of what sells. The catch is the elevation, so flood insurance and storm prep are a big part of the math.

Airport access1

A long haul. Southwest Florida International (RSW) is about an hour and a half north, and Miami is a little farther east on the Tamiami Trail. Everglades City has a small airstrip for private planes.

Community and social scene

A night out here is supper at one of the few casual places on the island or in Everglades City, then sunset over Chokoloskee Bay from the dock. By nine it is stars, bugs and an early alarm for the morning tide.
