You kayak the backwater keys in the morning and eat clams on the dock at sunset.
The scorecard
Tap any score for the local's take.
Nightlife1
Nights end early. A drink at the Neptune Bar inside the 1859 Island Hotel or at a spot over the water on Dock Street is about it, and most of the island is dark by 9.
Meet people2
A small circle, but a real one. The Cedar Key Arts Center runs classes and shows, Cedar Keys Audubon meets at the library, and the Lions Club puts on the Seafood Festival every October.
Peace and quiet5
State Road 24 is the only road in, and golf carts share the streets downtown. The island fills up for the two big festival weekends, then goes right back to quiet.
Walkability4
The whole town fits in a few blocks. From 2nd Street you can walk or take a golf cart to Dock Street, the fishing pier and the Cemetery Point boardwalk. The grocery store was lost to Helene, so stocking up means a drive to Chiefland.
On the water4
The public marina and its boat ramps sit right by Dock Street, and the big dock reopened in August 2025. The water is shallow, so think skiffs and kayaks, with Atsena Otie Key a short paddle out.
Beaches2
A small patch of sand at City Park is the town beach. It works for wading and sunsets, but the water is shallow and marshy and this is not a long white sand shoreline.
Dining and arts2
A short list. 83 West on Dock Street, clam chowder at Tony's and the Cedar Keyhole Artist Co-Op for browsing. The town is still down a few restaurants since Helene, so the open ones get busy.
Outdoors and wellness4
Paddle the backwater keys, walk the Railroad Trestle Nature Trail or drive out to Shell Mound in the Lower Suwannee refuge. Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve adds sandy trails, and the birding is excellent.
Affordability4
Prices run below most Florida beach towns. The catch is the water. This is a low island that flooded badly in 2023 and 2024, so look at flood insurance and elevation before anything else.
Airport access2
Gainesville (GNV) is the closest, a little over an hour up State Road 24. For more flights, Tampa and Orlando are each roughly two and a half hours away.
