Cape Coral
A city of more than 400 miles of canals, where a boat in the back yard is normal and waterfront is still within reach.
You lower the boat off the lift, idle out the canal to the river and are fishing the Gulf within the hour.

Nightlife2
Modest for a city this size. The bars cluster in South Cape along SE 47th Terrace, around Backstreets, and Cape Bike Night closes the street for live music a few times a year. Most other nights wind down early.
Meet people3
Decent, and mostly organized by the city. A Saturday farmers market at Club Square, classes at the Cape Coral Art Center, rec programs at Lake Kennedy Center, and street events like Cape Bike Night and Red, White & BOOM.
Peace and quiet3
The canal streets themselves are calm. The main roads are not. Del Prado, Pine Island Road and the two bridges to Fort Myers get heavy at rush hour and through the winter, and there is a lot of new building.
Walkability1
This is a driving city. It is spread over more than 100 square miles of wide parkways, and almost every errand needs a car. The few blocks of South Cape around SE 47th Terrace are the one place to park and stroll.
On the water5
More than 400 miles of canals, with a dock and boat lift behind a huge share of the houses. Tarpon Point has a full marina near the river mouth. Check each canal for bridges, locks and Gulf access before you buy.
Beaches1
No Gulf beach. The small river beach at the Yacht Club is open, but its fishing pier is still closed after Ian. Four Freedoms Park has sand for sunbathing only. Real beach days mean driving to Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel.
Dining and arts3
Plenty of solid restaurants spread along the parkways and in South Cape, plus waterfront tables at Tarpon Point. The Cape Coral Art Center has classes and shows. For theater and galleries, you cross the bridge.
Outdoors and wellness3
The city runs about 40 parks and rec sites, and Coral Oaks is the public golf course. The North Cape Flats Trail is part of Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, and burrowing owls nest on open lots around town.
Affordability4
One of the more affordable places on the Gulf to own a home on the water, and houses off the canals cost less again. Flood and wind insurance are a real line in the budget, so price them early.
Airport access4
Southwest Florida (RSW) is about 35 to 45 minutes away, depending on where you start and on bridge traffic. From the north end, Punta Gorda (PGD) is about 40 minutes.
