The scorecard

Nightlife2

Evenings here are dockside. Circles Waterfront at Lands End Marina serves until 9 most nights and 10 on Fridays and Saturdays, and that is about as late as town goes. For a real night out you drive to Tampa.

Meet people3

A modest but steady calendar. The Manatee Viewing Center is a daily gathering spot from November to mid April, boating is the common ground on the canals, and the SouthShore Chamber lists festivals and parades across Apollo Beach and Ruskin.

Peace and quiet3

The canal streets are calm, and town sees few visitors outside manatee season. The noise is commuter traffic. US 41 and the I-75 ramps back up at rush hour, and the area keeps adding homes.

Walkability1

Built for boats and cars. Homes are spread along miles of canals, and the shops sit in plazas on US 41 and Apollo Beach Boulevard. Very few everyday errands work on foot.

On the water5

This is why you come. About 55 miles of canals lead out to Tampa Bay, and a lot of back yards have a dock or a lift. Lands End Marina has dockside dining, and there is a county boat ramp a few minutes south at E.G. Simmons Conservation Park.

Beaches2

Despite the name, the beach is the weak spot. There is a small strip of bay sand at the county nature preserve at the end of Surfside Boulevard, good for a sunset and not for swimming. Gulf beaches are about an hour away.

Dining and arts2

A few waterfront seafood spots and casual places in the plazas along US 41. There are no theaters or galleries to speak of in town. The Firehouse Cultural Center in Ruskin, about 10 minutes south, has plays, comedy and jazz.

Outdoors and wellness3

The Manatee Viewing Center is free from November 1 to April 15, with a 900 foot tidal walk, a 50 foot tower and a coastal trail. E.G. Simmons Conservation Park and Little Manatee River State Park are a short drive south.

Affordability3

Mid range for the Florida coast. Homes in the newer inland subdivisions cost far less than canal front houses with a boat lift, and waterfront owners should budget for flood and wind insurance.

Airport access4

Tampa International (TPA) is about 35 minutes north by I-75 and the Selmon Expressway when traffic is moving. Sarasota Bradenton (SRQ) is about 45 minutes south.
