In the Keys, people give directions by mile marker. The markers run along US 1 from Key West at mile 0 up toward Key Largo. Where you land on that road shapes your whole life there.
The Upper Keys
Key Largo and Islamorada are the closest to the mainland. Islamorada is known for sport fishing and a laid back, on the water pace. Being closer to Miami makes trips for shopping, flights and doctors easier.
The Middle Keys
Marathon sits in the middle, with the famous Seven Mile Bridge running south toward the Lower Keys. It's a working island town with marinas and a slower pace.
The Lower Keys and Key West
The Lower Keys are quieter and more natural. Key West, at the end of the road, is the opposite: walkable, social and busy with visitors year round.
What to know
- Everything is farther away, including big hospitals and airports.
- Insurance and building rules are strict, and costs are high.
- When a big storm comes, there's one road out.
